New start of BIL
Kim Sangbin's new start
Kim Sangbin, a Busan boy who came to Seoul because he dreamed of becoming a singer, participated in <Produce 101 Season 2> to mark the end of his extensive trainee life. Unfortunately, he couldn't pass the gate of his debut, but as an individual trainee, there were many changes. He's got a reliable agency and a new name called 'BIL'. And at last, he is about to release his debut album that he yearned for in his dreams. We met him, who has a new beginning ahead, and listened to his first album and the backstory of <Producer 101 Season 2>. Let's listen to his voice, which expresses his bold ambition to move forward composedly yet boldly.
MUSINSA: Through <Produce 101> we thought you would have a round appearance, but seeing you in actual, that's not true. It seems like you lost a lot of weight.
Kim Sangbin (BIL): Haha. That's a relief. Before my debut, I'm working hard on dieting. I also exercise and control my diet.
MUSINSA: There have been a lot of changes this year. Until you participated in <Produce 101 Season 2>, you were an individual trainee. However, the seasons changed twice and now your formal debut is coming up. How do you feel these days?
BIL: Strangely, it doesn't feel like I'm debuting. When was a trainee, I thought that if I debuted, I would feel like floating and very excited but now that my debut is ahead, it's not like that. Instead, I became calmer. It seems like it's not real.
MUSINSA: Your real name is Kim Sangbin but you will debut with a new name 'BIL' as your stage name. Is there any reason why you changed names?
BIL: I kept on thinking about having to use a stage name since before. This time, I met with an agency and while preparing for an album, we talked about stage names and after worrying with the company staff, the name was born.
MUSINSA: The last character of your name is "BIN", but your new name is "BIL", we're curious about the meaning. Please tell us what it means.
BIL: If you list down the last character of my name in one line, it's ‘ㅂㅣㄴ’. Here the 'ㅣ' looks like 'I' and ‘ㄴ’ looks like 'L'. So we came up with the idea of 'BIL', and we decided on that. It's not a name with a big meaning but I like it because it's simple and intuitive.
MUSINSA: Please talk about your debut album.
BIL: My debut album will be in a single form. This is my first album as an artist so I made a song that resembles me. It is a light and bright song, so it would be nice to listen to lightly. It is a more meaningful song since I participated in composing, writing lyrics and of course, producing. I can't exactly say what the genre is but I rap and sing as well. The dance is like riding on to the rhythm, that much? It will be officially released on December 12th, I hope you will listen to it once.
MUSINSA: Rapping, singing, dancing, you are good at all three so we thought, won't you debut as an idol rapper? It's a step that broke expectations.
BIL: I got a lot of attention and love at once through <Produce 101 Season 2>. But I know that this interest won't last long. I am very grateful to receive the love and interest of the public. But I wanted to become an artist who does the music I want to do, and does a great job, rather than focusing on popularity. Proceed finely and lengthily? (laugh) I want to be loved for a long time through good music.
MUSINSA: How do you spend your days before your debut?
BIL: The single album contains only one song, but I'm practicing hard because I'm going to show unreleased songs at the show. The beginning of my day is a little ambiguous. It's because I sleep in the morning. I work in the studio all night and in the morning I sleep at home for a bit and then work out. Then I go to the studio again. It's a series of living.
MUSINSA: Your sleeping time seems ridiculously little.
BIL: I think I've been freed from sleep while in <Producer 101 Season 2>. During the filming period, I severely didn't get sleep, and just practiced and filmed, so now even if I'm not able to sleep, it's not hard. In fact, the hardest thing these days is dieting. I’m under personal training, and it's very hard.
MUSINSA: What was your motivation in participating in <Produce 101 Season 2> which you yourself said was harsh?
BIL: My hometown is Busan. But to be an idol, I thought that I should come to Seoul first. Entertainment companies and broadcasting stations are all in Seoul. I lived in Seoul for three years as a trainee. Just when I had a lot of worries, I wanted to complete it rather than go back to my hometown without doing anything. So I joined <Produce 101>.
MUSINSA: You were a trainee for three years. It seems to be difficult because you had no income and no guaranteed future.
BIL: It wasn't that hard. I slept in a cool place in the summer and slept in a warm place in winter. Not sleeping on the street somewhere in winter. However, I couldn't eat what I wanted to eat. (laugh)
MUSINSA: You seem to be optimistic. So, when did you start to dream of becoming a singer?
BIL: I started to dream of becoming a singer when I was 17. Since then, I have been dancing, singing and rapping in earnest. I didn't know what to do in order to become a singer, so I went to a practical music academy. When I actually went to the academy, I judged that it wasn't something to be taught by someone. After that, with the idea that practice is the answer, I practiced rapping, singing and dancing to death.
MUSINSA: We're curious about what kind of songs you usually enjoy listening to.
BIL: Before, I listened to Billboard Chart 100. I listened to various songs and found music that I like and could do well. I widened my musical horizons, and my tastes became more pronounced. Nowadays, I listen to DPR Live and Groovy Room's songs a lot. In particular, DPR Live wasn't so famous a few years ago, but now he became a very "hot" musician. I think it's the result of consistent work. That's why he is a musician who I like and respect.
MUSINSA: Since of course you like music and listening to it, besides that, please let us know your other hobbies or other ways you relieve stress.
BIL: I don't like sports or games. When I meet my friends, we watch a movie, eat, and go to a cafe. Now that I said that, it's very much like a date course (laugh). When I'm alone, I definitely like to just stay still. Just lie down, then watch a movie or scribble down lyrics. Those times are peaceful and nice.
MUSINSA: What kind of musician do you want to remain as towards the public?
BIL: I want to become a musician who makes songs that people won't get tired of listening to even after a long time. I'm still lacking and not good at it, but I will show steady growth. So I hope you will continue to keep an eye on the artist 'BIL'. Lastly, I would like to ask everyone to give a lot of interest to BIL's song to be released to the world for the first time on Tuesday, December 12th.
